Module 13

For this assignment we have a lot of options of what to write our paper on. I have chosen to write my paper on a few different thing. I want to talk about a few of the things I have learned from taking this class. I have learned so many different things pertaining to ways to run a business and ways big company run their businesses. I have learned what works and what doesn’t work. By taking this class it has caused me to do a little research on some great companies. One of the companies I decide to write about was amazon a company I think is ran so great. Amazon does so many great things they have such great customer services and provide more goods and services than a lot of people know about. Also by taking this class I have had the chance to dive deeper into what computers have done and how they have changed the world. Going into this class I didn’t know what to expect but this class has been great. A few of the things I want to discuss in my essay is what I have learned, what we all can learn and why I like this class.

What I have learned

Like I have stated earlier I have learned a lot from this class. Each week we read a lot of the class text book. I learned a lot from what I was reading and from the points the book brings to your mind. As I would first start reading the chapter or even the chapter title I would think what could I possibly learn from this chapter. But then I would read and it would make me start to think and I would learn how so business are run and I would find myself getting on my phone looking up words or different things about companies it was really cool. I really liked the weeks when we would take a break from our class text book and would get the chances to write about a broader subject and get to choose what we were going to write about.

What we all can learn

As I would read or do research on things I was learning from this class I would a lot of the time think about if many people knew what I was reading and if they did know about it how would the world be different and would it make the world a better place I think it would.

Why I like this class

In this part I will be completely honest. I really enjoyed the way this class was taught and the way the class was structured. This class is not an upper division class and it wasn’t treated like one. Now I say this for a reason and I believe a good reason. I am not a fan of when you take a class that is a general class but if you didn’t know it you would have thought it was an upper division. I think our teacher should continue to teach it that way.

In conclusion I really liked this class and I really like the way it was taught and structured. There are a lot of things you could learn from this class no matter what field of study you are going into. I think this class is a great general’s class. I live there is so many things we can learn from this class that we can apply to the world to help make the world a better place for all of us to live in and for the many generations to come.

                The statement why the future doesn’t need us. This statement can bring up a lot of different topics to talk about. My personal option the future does need us. This statement is referring to how computers would be able to do what we do. In recent years there has been movies that are made about how computers take over. There is always a common problem to that. Humans have a gut feeling or an instinct that computers do not have computers are smart and can do a lot of things. But computers can only do what a human has programed a computer to do. It does not think on it own and first off a human has to create the computer making it capable to do the things humans want it to do. I don’t think computers will ever replace what a human can do. Computers have become and will continue to become such a huge part of everyday life. But there will always be the need for the human touch the ability to make the right diction based off of what humans can do. This is a very important part in my option of why humans will never be replaced by a computer humans are much more important than computers and will always make better dictions. So the statement should be the future does need us.

                Being educated on computers in jr high and throughout high school. In jr high I had my first computer class I would say still to this day that class was the most informative computer class I have taken and probably where I have learned the most. The teacher teaching this class was very nice and willing to help you individually if you didn’t understand something. I learned more about using word, excel and most of the windows offices. In high school I continued my education learning about computers. Here I learned even more about using word, excel and Microsoft office. We also learned how to create websites, movies and many more cool features you can do with the touch of a button. One thing I have always struggled with is I have to look at the key board when I am typing it is hard for me to type while looking at the computer screen. The class in jr high and the class in high school helped me get better at typing.

                How computers helped me on my mission. Computers where a big part of my mission especially to help with communicating with my family while serving in Washington Seattle. Every preparation day on my mission we would go to the library and email our family, friends and our mission president each week. I always looked forward to this day on my mission to be able to communicate family and friends as well as my mission president. This experience made me very grateful for computers and the ability they have to help people in whatever task they are trying to accomplish.

                How computers help me in my work. Computers are a big part of my job I am constantly using a computer to write reports, look at bids, create drawings, put in notes or look up products. Computers are a big part of a lot of jobs these days

                In conclusion while doing this assignment I have had the chance to look back and see what role computers have played in my life and being educated on them. Computers are a big part of our life’s and are becoming more and more a part of our life’s each day. I hope that we all use them wisely and create great things by the click of a button.

            For this assignment, I have chosen to write my IT job interview on a man named Mike Wiser. For Mike Wiser’s job, he creates apps from his computer for cell phones. He is the product manager which means he is heavily involved in the programing for the apps. One thing that I really think is awesome is that, even though he gets to work home Monday through Friday, his brain is working twenty four seven on new ideas for apps and ways to get people to use the apps he has already made. Here is a little back ground on Mike. He graduated from Brigham Young University with his bachelors in engineering. Right after graduating, Mike landed a job with Iomega and help develop their overseas department traveling all over Asia. He also helped out with creating new ways to store memory to things such as floppy disks and SD Cards.

            Before sitting down to interview Mike, I did a little research about apps and how to make them and what all goes into the process. As I started to do the research, I was amazed at all the pieces of the puzzle that have to come together in order to make an app for a phone and the storage that has to be used so that a person could continue to use the app daily. For example, let’s take a basic gaming app. It first starts off as an idea. The next thing you have to do is draw it out and come up with an initial plan. The company then has to hire all the right people for the process to begin, including a product manager, computer programmers, IT people and the list goes on and on. This is just the beginning of the whole process. There still has to be someone who to run all the data and servers to hold all the users and make sure the app runs successfully, not to mention all the tweaks and fixes that are constantly being made for the app to run smoother.

            As Mike and I sat down for the interview I first asked him about what drives him every morning to want to make apps. Mike said “I have always loved coming up with new ideas and watching them come to life” he goes on to say “every day I get to turn on my computer and just do what I love”. Mike’s right. Many of use to work each day and have limits on what we can or can’t do, but Mike is always able to start with an idea each day and then he takes that idea and expands on it to see if it works. The next thing I asked Mike was what the hardest part about his job was. He said “It can be hard sometimes to get all the pieces of the puzzle meaning all the people involved on the same page” I think this part of jobs and of life in general is important is always a little difficult, especially when we are not all on the same page. But Mike said “it is also good to have conference calls and hear why people don’t agree with others ideas. By doing that we can come up with a lot of ideas and some may or may not work for one specific app but might be the start of another one.”

            I really enjoyed interviewing Mike and, by doing so, I was able to learn a lot about the IT world and how to make apps. As I open apps on my phone from now on, I think I will think more about the process of what went into making the app and how it is running and operating as I use it.

Logic

The power of logic in the world and how companies use it. The story that we were asked to read for this assignment was about insurance company’s and account that that crunch numbers and people who use logic in their work fields. Logic and logistics is very important. An example of this to me is amazon I think they are one of the most logical smart company’s and also one of the most logistical company’s. One of the examples of why I think they are such a smart company is the way they handle and treat there customers. They offer many different ways to benefits from shopping with them. One of the ways is there prime account holders. Amazon prime allows you to be able to many different things. One of the cool features of this is a movie or show capability like Netflix or Hulu. You can watch many differ shows one the prime account for free with your prime account. Or you can rent a movie for a low cost. Another one of the cool things prime allows you to do is get free shipping on items that Amazon approves for free shipping. And it comes to your house within two business days. This is very convenient for people that you can sit in the comforts of your own home and order something on the prime account from Amazon and have it be to your house within two business days. Another way I think k Amazon is very logic in the way they do business is the way they have thousands and thousands of sellers that you can buy so many different things from on Amazon. Whatever it may be I always usually check amazon first to see if they have it for cheaper than wherever else I am looking at the same product and a lot of the time it is cheaper. Amazon really has made shopping so different and so efficient.

Another company I think does a very good job at do business logical is UPS. I think UPS is one of the world’s most logistical companies. The have stores all over the world and can have something shipped to you from around the world overnight. To be able to do something like this you have to have a very smart business. There are a lot of key pieces that have to world together in order for that package to go all the way around the world with in a short amount of time.  This is very convenient for many companies around the world to use that they can get products to people quickly and efficiently. I think the smarter and more logical companies are the better they ruin and the more money they can save. I think logic in companies is so important. I think these are just a few of many other great companies that do a really good job and logic in companies. I think the\at there is also a part that we all play in helping make the world a more logical place and I hope we all do our part to make this world a better place for all of us to live in and for the many of generations of people to live in. let’s all do our part to help and be a little more logical in all that we do.

Describe the building of a Dell laptop?

Laptops in general are much better tools or computers than a home computer that is stationary on a desk. You can take places and be on the go. There are many different types of companies that makes computers. In particular the dell computers in my opinion are build very well. I have a few friends who have dell computers and they love them. They seem to last a long time and seem to have great reviews online. I think computers are all kind of build the same. Yes they have different types of processors and different types of hardware inside of the computers. I think the only computers that are much different from other ounces are mac books. Apple has a one of a kind product. They started making smaller computers and slimmer computers before anyone else did. I believe many computer companies are always following the ideas that apple comes up with. I believe dell for a while was leading the industry in computers. I my self am not a big fan of trying to learn how to use an apple computer but I do believe they are a great device. I am use to Microsoft computers that run on Microsoft hardware. I also am a huge fan of tablets that can turn into a computer or vise versa a computer that can turn into a tablet. I am currently writing this on a Microsoft surfaces and I love using the surface to accomplish things like home work, emails, spread sheets and many more things. I do however find it hard sometimes to accomplish other things like scanning ideas at first. I think that a lot of people buy dells and that a lot of people in general do like dells. I also think a lot of businesses buy a large amount of dell computers for there business to run on. Or large corporations can connect from across the world and make business plans.

Does al-Qaeda have a supply chain?

I would say that they do have a supply chain and that it works really good.

What is the curse of oil?

I believe the curse of oil is that we really on it to much. I think that we have to many key transportations for us as a civilization runs off of oil. I think that we as a country are getting better at becoming more and more distant to the use of oil for our everyday travels and other uses. And that we are making other alternative ways to run things not on oil. I also think that we are making oil last long as well as gas mileage is getting better in cars. I think that the country is learning new ways to use oil better. As we saw in the legislative session this year that we are passing bills and making efforts to become more and more green. I believe we all have a part to do and if we all do our part we can become greener as a world.

                How have computers been used in my personal education? This is a great question. Computers have been around and a part of my birth sense I was born from the input of the time I was bon how many pounds I was and the name my parents gave me. As I continued on through elementary school using computers was a big learning point. In elementary school we would use computers to learn how to do math, how to spell and to play games. At home I remember going to stores and buying computer games to use at home on our computer. In this essay I will discuss and talk about three major parts of how computers have educated me and help me throughout life. Why are some countries or regions better at doing some things than other countries and regions? This is a great question and one I believe has so many answer to it. I believe first and for most some countries are better at doing things because of the advancement in technology with in that country’s. Technology can help better a lot of things such as the advancement of cars because of technology. This allows countries to build cars with more options that are appealing to buyers and the countries can also charge more for that particular car. This also apply to the medical aspect of the world. Technology not only has advanced medicine so that people live longer but is one of the world’s largest money markets. For example companies are always trying to create the next big medical breakthrough or the next big medical drug that cures or helps a patient get over whatever illness they may have. Those companies that do create this medical device that helps get paid a lot of money and brings spotlight to their country which untimely bring money. Which brings me to my next topic I think money also helps in the world of doing things better. With more money to spend you can create a better product, you can staff more and ultimately have better options.

What are self-directed consumers? To me a self-directed consumers wants to know all the details, be set up with the best company in whatever they do and have peace of mind. I would say I am a self-directed consumer. Whatever it is that I am purchasing I want to know all the details and fine comb everything before I make a purchase. I want the very best for me would say I am a self-directed consumer. Whatever it is that I am purchasing I want to know all the details and fine comb everything before I make a purchase. I want the very best for my money and I too want peace of mind. For example if I am looking to purchase a product I will get online and find the best deal I will read reviews and maybe even ask family and friends if they have any info on the product I am researching to buy. This to me is an example of a self-directed consumer and I would go ahead and say that I am one.

Does globalization mean Americanization? I believe that this could be the answer. American is defiantly at the forefront of globalization and the advancement of technology. Although this doesn’t mean every country that is advancing in technology is becoming Americanized. I do believe this is the correct answer for America though.

In closing these chapter have been fascinating to read and very educational. There is a lot to learn and many things to think about when it comes to these questions. And many ways to become more Intune with what is going on around us in the world and how we can all do our part to make it a better place for all of us to live on and for generations to come.

                What is free trade? Free trade is the ability to be able to trade, buy and sale goods and services between other countries freely. This means no restrictions and no government’s control of what is to be traded, sold or bought. I think that free trade is very important and helps many country. There are many examples you could draw from why free trade is important. One of the examples includes the amount of clothes we import from other countries. Often times you can turn a tag on a clothing item over and see that it reads made in China, Taiwan and other countries. We can often buy clothing items at a lower cost. This making it cheaper for us as consumers to buy clothing in stores in America. I also believe that the free trade can help countries stabilize their economies. Some countries may have a large amount of one specific item so they are able to sale it to other countries who may need it.

                What skills and personality traits make a new middler? I believe there are many skills and personality traits that make a better “middler” class. I also believe most of this country is determined by its middle class. You always hear of the government saying how we can strengthen our middle class. It is important to have a healthy strong middle class. Some of the skills I believe that make a stronger “middler” class is the importance of education. Having a “middler” class that has college degrees helps tremendously. This usually means better job, higher pay, and in return lower unemployment rates and higher tax income for the United States. Trait that I think are very important in order to be successful include drive and ambition. In this day and age, kids just want to sit around and play video games and they think that they will just be handed everything they need in life. This cannot be the mind set of young Americans that are the future of this country. They have to have drive, determination, ambition and an attitude of a go-getter. I believe this is something that has to be taught in the home and at school. These are just a few of what I believe to be many skills and traits that make up a “new middler” class.

                What is CQ + PQ > IQ? CQ stands for curiosity quotient. PQ stand for passion quotient and IQ stands for intelligence quotient. In Thomas L Friedman’s book The World is flat, this is a formula that he has made and one he says he lives by. His theory is that if someone is curious enough and or passionate enough about a topic or piece of information, they can become just as well informed or knowledgeable on that certain topic as someone who is intelligent. He also says that this knowledge is obtainable because of all the vast amount of information readily available due to the internet. I agree with this theory. For example, I have always had a great love for sports. Although I have only played a handful of them competitively, I have a pretty good knowledge of all sports. I believe this is due to my curiosity and my passion for sports. I watch a lot of sports, I read about a lot of sports and of course I watch and follow a lot of ESPN. This is just my personal experience with this theory but I do believe it is correct.

The triple convergence to me is part of flatting the world as far as the business side goes. It makes most business level there playing field. To play on the same field as everyone else. The triple convergence can also be where business start a new trend. For example in the book The World is Flat by Thomas L Friedman he talks about South West Airlines creating a way for people who are flying to buy tickets online or be able to use a e-ticket. Now days you can even download and use an app to find a flight, buy the flight and then use your phone to scan in at the airport. There are many more example of companies that have the triple convergence. Another example is Amazon. Amazon to me is a great example. They have created an online mega store where people say if you can’t find it on Amazon than it doesn’t exist. For me I always check Amazon first. It is usually cheaper and you can stay in the comforts of your own home and have it shipped to you within two business days. They have changed the way many companies operate and their ability to lower their prices and shipping cheaper and faster. Amazon also has tapped into the movie streaming center. This is another example of the triple convergence and another example of flatting the world. You don’t even have to leave your home anymore to buy, rent or stream a movie.

The story of the India and Indiana. A company in India won the Bid to handle claims for a company in Indiana. So who is the exploiter and who is the exploited the exploiter is the business in Indiana who was trying to us the companies in India to make money. So the Exploited is the company in India. Many people may think both of them failed at what they were trying to accomplish but I feel as if the company in Indiana knew what they were doing in the beginning and tried to use a company in India to their advantage at any cost of some other company. Than the Company in India got caught up in the mess and tried to pull a fast one. They both where caught. When doing business it is important to so it the right way.

Intellectual property is the right and or the patents to something which you have created. This is important because it stops copy wrights. It allows people to make something and not have someone else make the same thing off of your idea. I believe it is important because without it in my option people could just wait for something to come out that was cool and a hot idiom that everyone wants and that just copy it and make it for cheaper. The basic reason for it is money. Who gets to claim the rights of a creation, Because of intellectual property you hear of company getting sued over this or that. One company thinks another company copied there plans. Or one cell phone company created a phone to close to one that already exist. In my option this is important for us as consumers as well. I believe because of this, we as consumers get a better product.

What is offshoring and how is it different from outsourcing?

                Offshoring defined in The World is Flat by Thomas L Friedman is “when a company takes one of its factory’s that is operating in a certain country and moves it to another country to avoid higher taxes, insurance and overall cost to produce the good they are producing”. This is happening all the time right here in the United States. For example, a company that has recently moved their main factories offshore from the United States is Phillips Lighting Company. Some of you might even have a few of the lights they produce in your homes. They have moved there company with the mindset that they can cut cost to produce lights, pay employees less and, at the end of the day, make more money. Outsourcing, on the other hand, is taking a small part of your business that you are performing and hiring another company to do it for you. A great example of this was a medical company I used to work for. When the company first started out they had their own call center with staffed employees that they had to pay health insurance for, a wage and provide a working space for them. By deciding to outsource the call center of the business, they could hire a company to do that for them and just pay a monthly or yearly fee which would free them from the headache of all of the little up keep and over head of staffing the call centers themselves.

What is a supply chain and how does Walmart use their supply chain to their advantage?

                A supply chain is a network of suppliers, producers, distributors and retailers. So, simply put, it is what takes place from the very idea of a product before it is made to the end result all the way to the point where you make the decision to buy it off the shelf. Supply chains are so important to be able to keep that line of communication consistent as well as the product coming at the same price. Walmart has taken advantage of their supply chain by keeping your shelves stocked and as well as their shelves stocked with what the consumers are mostly buying. Walmart has a system that continues to run smoothly. When a consumer takes something off Walmart’s shelves and buys it, their computer system notifies headquarters and then headquarters notifies people all the way down the supply chain. This allows the shelves to continuously be restocked. Walmart can also have things rerouted in any direction they want, making Walmart very effective and efficient.

How has Google affected businesses?

                At the beginning of this chapter on Google, Friedman states that Google’s goal is too one day have the ability to let everyone obtain access to the world’s information through their cell phone. I believe they have met their goal. Google has affected business in so many different ways but one of the examples I want to expand on is that they are making everything available online. To take Black Friday for example, just a few short years ago, stores everywhere would be a complete mad house. People would stampede their way through the store to get the best deals on the items they were looking for. Now, with the help of Google, there are now record lows of people actually showing up at the stores for Black Friday sales. Because of the help of Google, you can now do all your shopping online in the comfort of your own home. Business now have to not only have a whole staff for their stores, but for their online business as well. This allows for more competition between companies in order for the costumer to get the best deal.

                While preparing for this week’s assignment, I found the subject matter to be very interesting. Many of the topics were easy for me to understand because I could relate what was being discussed back to my own life experiences.

                What is workflow software? To me, workflow software is the ability to communicate more effectively through software. Work flow software has changed the world in just a short amount of time. There are many example of workflow software and two in particular that I would like to expand on. In my field of work, I am the middle man or a link of communication to many other people and companies. In order to complete just one of my projects, I usually have to talk to contractors, insurance companies, providers, funders, coworkers, my boss, and the consumers. Sometimes, during the middle of one of these projects, I start to think about what it would have been like to try and work jobs like mine a hundred years ago. The resources at my disposal would be limited and I would definitely be a lot busier than I am now. I wouldn’t have been able to just get on my cell phone and call the contractor to change something or to get a bid. I wouldn’t be able to send off emails as well as receive responses for projects in the same day. There wouldn’t have been a computer with access to the internet where I could find the best prices and deals for the specific item that I needed. Heck, Amazon Prime and its free shipping would have been just an unlikely dream! During this day and age, the workflow software has made all these processes much faster and very time efficient.

Another example of the workflow software is the process of building a car. To me, this is a perfect example of workflow software because it allows for efficiency and speed. Instead of teaching people what is needed to make a car, companies are able take advantage of the workflow software system by having computers communicate to machines that instantly understand the process and are able to do what is needed in order to build a functioning and safe car. I am thankful for workflow software every day because it makes my job easier as well as many other complicated but necessary jobs that happen around the world.

What is open source software or community develop software? Open source software is a huge part of today’s social network. Open source software gives us the ability to share information, pictures, data, answer questions, and much, much more. I think two great examples of open source software are Facebook and Instagram. This is a great benefit to many companies because it allows for the communication that is needed to make a business successful. As a kid, my family and I were huge into snowmobiling. We knew sleds inside and out. I was quite fascinated when I learn how these huge machines operated. By doing some research, I came across a TV series called “How it’s made”. One of the episodes I watched showed how they made different snowmobiles, from each small piece all the way up to the finished project. The TV show also talked about all the different companies that helped finalize the process of building a snowmobile. The company’s tasks ranged from making all the plastic components of the sled to actually making the engine and the frame of the snowmobile itself. The whole process of the making of the snowmobile is just one example of how important outsourcing can be and it also demonstrates the benefit of how many jobs and opportunities are created around the world due to this system.
